Wedge Wire Screen Tube for Fish Diversion

The wedge wire screen effectively separates sand, silt, debris, fish and aquatic growth from the intake water.

Many industrial facilities extract water from lakes, rivers or coastal waters for cooling installations, hydropower or water supply. The entrainment of floating debris, fish or jellyfish can have adverse effects on industrial processes and cause fish mortality. The wedge wire screen effectively separates sand, silt, debris, fish and aquatic growth from the intake water.

Wedgewire screens are cylindrical metal screens with trapezoidal-shaped “wedgewire” slots with openings of 0.5 to 10 mm. They combine very low flow-through velocities, small slot size, and naturally occurring high screen surface sweeping velocities to minimize impingement and entrainment.

Benefits

• No endangered, threatened, or listed species were entrained.

• At an average intake velocity of 0.33 fps, the screen was successful in completely eliminating impingement.

• The wedgewire prevented entrainment of adult and juvenile fish species.

• The extremely low proportional losses of fish, shrimp and crab populations
